Brighton Museum and Art Gallery

The Brighton Museum and Art Gallery is set in the heart of the buzzing ‘cultural quarter’, and is free to the public. There is an exciting range of exhibitions, displayed in unique and interesting surroundings.

The building was originally King George IV’s stable complex, and now includes the Brighton Dome concert hall. The Museum and gallery now houses one of the most important and eclectic collections outside of the national institutions.

Following a £10 million facelift, Brighton Museum and Art Gallery reopened in 2002 with its diverse and exciting collections. These include the Fine Art collection, which houses over 2000 stunning works, which is almost as large as the National Galleries’ collection.

The Fashion Gallery celebrates centuries of design and style, from Regency to Biba. There are over 10,000 objects in this collection, including men’s, women’s and children’s clothing and accessories, highlighting the shifting styles and interests across periods of time.

The World Art collection includes artefacts that date back two millennia, and proves to be one of the finest collections of its kind in Britain.

The Images of Brighton and Exploring Brighton exhibitions provide fantastic insight into the diverse and colourful history of Brighton. Through film, audio, images and artefacts visitors will be able to explore the rich history of the area, seeing both the traditional and the unconventional that help make Brighton the vibrant hub it is today.

The ‘Performance’ exhibition is a popular one that illuminates a number of aspects from around the world that have helped to define theatre and performance now.

The Brighton History Centre is located on the top floor and is a fantastic source for discovering and exploring local and family history. It is a focal point for the museum’s complete catalogue of collections.
