The Royal Pavilion in Brighton has sparked both controversy and admiration – it is a building that epitomises the excesses of the aristocracy in the Regency period in Britain. George IV, the Prince Regent, commissioned the designing and building of the palace. Many have criticised it for its grandiosity and ostentatious design, as it was built at a time of national uncertainty and distress, when the economy was struggling, and the ‘lower’ class was paying for the Prince Regent’s frivolities.
However, the Royal Pavilion in Brighton proves to be a source of intrigue and fascination, drawing many visitors to marvel at the architecture, antiques, art work and the grounds.
Royal Pavilion Brighton – The Rooms
There are a number of stunning rooms in the Pavilion that are home to many stories and tragedies. The Music Room, for example, is decorated by a hand-knotted Axminster carpet, and it played host to the Italian opera singer, Rossini, in 1823.
