Volks Electric Railway
Originally opened in 1883, the Volks Electric Railway is the oldest operating electric railway in the world. The railway runs for just over a mile along the seafront, from the Aquarium at The Pier, to the Black Rock (for the Marina). The unique narrow gauge railway is a great way to experience some of Brighton’s flavoursome history.
Over the years, there have been changes to the route and length of the railway. Most recently, the track was diverted off its old formation onto a new line with sharp curves in order to make way for a new beach volleyball court. With all of these alterations, the railway is in a fantastic location and is a great way to view a portion of the southern coast.
The cars can carry up to eighty people in a single journey along the beach, and there are three stops along the way. There are toilets at both ends of the journey. Fares are low and excellent value.
